Griffiths Cold Spring Farm Agricultural Preservation Restriction

Cold Spring Farm has been in the Griffiths family for generations. Eleanor Griffiths was born and grew up on the farm and raised her family there, however, when she passed away the family realized they would need to sell the farm to settle the estate and taxes and provide for the family. The property is a fabulous mix of farmland and wildlife habitat (including core habitat for rare species), part of an extensive block running most of the way along Hewins Street and the Housatonic River - a patchwork of farms that date back to early in Sheffield's history. SLT helped the family secure approval for an Agricultural Preservation Restriction and was fortunate to find a local family, the Wolfes, who purchased the farm subject to the APR and will run it as a diversified organic community farmstand. Although Sheffield still has a viable agricultural base and skilled farmers like the Wolfes, development pressures have made farmland unaffordable for farmers, so this APR is essential. SLT is now working intensively with the Wolfes, neighbors and the community to raise the funds needed to conserve this property. Your contribution now will help ensure the future of this productive farm! To make a contribution or pledge, please print and mail our donation or pledge form. Contributions to SLT are tax-deductible. Thank you!

The Griffiths Cold Spring Farm is part of an extensive block of farmland and wildlife habitat running most of the way along Hewins Street that includes forested acres, streams and springs. The APR prevents fragmentation of landscape and protects sensitive wetlands and wildlife habitat.
