Howden Farm has been part of the local community and landscape for as long as many people can remember. Bruce Howden's father combined two farms on Rannapo Road and developed the famous Howden and Howden Biggie pumpkins there. Today, in addition to the pumpkins, Bruce has brought back the sweet corn longtime residents remember so fondly, and will soon be offering a variety of pick-your-own berries. Walking through the fields with their vistas of the Housatonic and distant mountains, it's easy to imagine you've been transported back in time. The riparian corridor and scattered wetlands and floodplain along the river offer added ecological benefit. SLT is spearheading a multi-phase effort with The Trustees of Reservations and Berkshire Natural Resource Council to raise the remaining funds and protect Howden Farm until the full APR can be put in place. To help the land trust raise the remaining funds for the APR, Bruce Howden will match with a reduction in the purchase price of the development rights up to $100,000 of donations and pledges received during 2008 from the community. Please contribute today to protect the heart of this scenic Sheffield neighborhood! To make a contribution or pledge, please print and mail our donation or pledge form. Contributions to SLT are tax-deductible. Thank you!

This topographic map of the proposed Howden Farm Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) in close proximity to the already existing Bennett and Bangs APRs illustrates the growing block of protected farm land which is critical to continued agricultural viability, wildlife habitat and the historic rural character of this neighborhood. |
